Sliding Scale: A More Equitable Rate

I am committed to working to providing therapy at a more equitable rate, which is why I provide therapy on sliding scale. My goal is to provide quality psychotherapy services while making a moderate, stable income. Clients who are able to afford to pay at or near the full-market rate make it possible for me to also take reduced rates for low-income clients who would otherwise be unable to afford therapy while keeping my income in the moderate range.

The sliding scale is income-based and ranges broadly from below $71 to the full market rate of $300, with a commitment to not accepting fees over a percentage of a client’s income. While the upper range represents the upper-end of the market costs for therapy (particularly for high cost of living areas like New York City and San Franscisco), I recognize that higher rates are inaccessible to most middle and lower-income individuals and households. At the same time, if I only saw clients at the lower end of the scale or below, I would either need to overbook myself or suffer financial hardship, either of which would hinder the quality of the therapy I provide.

Please don’t let the full-market rate at the top of the scale scare you off. The $300 fee is a ceiling and I rarely, if ever, see people at the top of the scale. If this is you, then you have choices in who you can see and, as such, can better choose your own price. I hope if you are a high-income individual that you see value in knowing that paying at or near the full fee will allow others to be seen at below market rates.

 Below Scale Rates

Not currently accepting new reduced rate clients

When I have more clients paying fees near the top of the sliding scale it allows me to see clients whose income falls below the above scale at rates under $71 per session. Availability for their lower rate sessions will be announced as they become available.

See my listing on Open Path Collective for more information on lower scale sessions ($30 - $70).

Please note, sliding scale and below scale rates are intended to help people more equitably access therapy. These rates are not “discounted” therapy. A reduced rate can still be challenging to fit into one’s budget. Therapy like other forms of caring labor offers a valuable service in supporting people’s health, well-being and development.

Pay-What-You-Can

I believe strongly in access to gender-affirming healthcare is medically necessary and essential care. In support of access to this life changing healthcare, I provide letters to those seeking gender-affirming care on a pay-what-you-can basis. I suggest paying anywhere from $20 to $300, but you may choose to pay more or less based on your ability to pay.
